Massachusetts Maps (See Also Map Information for other States) - Maps are critical to genealogical research. The Massachusetts State Archives has an eighteenth-century [1794-5] series of maps for the majority of Massachusetts towns, as well as a series done in 1831, the latter of which were published and might be found in libraries or elsewhere. Numerous town histories contain excellent maps of their towns indicating dwelling places and owners at different points in town history.

As with most New England states, an F.W. Beers Atlas for each Massachusetts county was published in the 1870s. Presently only the Worcester County one is in print (Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Books, 1971). Major research libraries generally have copies of these folio-sized maps, which indicate residences, owners, schools, roads, churches, and cemeteries.

Excellent map collections of town lots and earlier land distribution exist at the Massachusetts State Archives. Good printed maps are available for research at the New England Historic Genealogical Society and many town offices. Saco Valley Printing is reissuing nineteenth-century editions of maps for Essex and Middlesex counties. These include structures and owners' names.
